Essay Writing

At advanced level, essay writing also requires control over style, tone, and revision. Formal academic tone is usually expected in analytical, persuasive, argumentative, and expository essays. This means avoiding slang, contractions where inappropriate, emotional exaggeration, and overly personal language unless the task specifically invites it. The register should match the purpose, audience, and genre. Different essay types demand different techniques. A narrative essay may focus on sequence, sensory detail, and reflection. A descriptive essay emphasizes precise imagery and selection of details. An expository essay prioritizes clarity and explanation. A persuasive or argumentative essay depends on logical development and careful wording. A discursive essay may present multiple perspectives before reaching a balanced judgment. Advanced writers adapt style to genre rather than forcing one formula onto every task. Editing and proofreading are essential final stages, not optional extras. Revision improves ideas, structure, and evidence. Proofreading checks grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence boundaries, and reference consistency. Many advanced essays lose marks because the content is strong but the tone is inconsistent or the final draft contains preventable errors. • Check tone first: is it formal, neutral, or reflective? • Revise for logic before correcting surface errors • Read aloud to catch awkward phrasing and missing words • Check whether each sentence serves the purpose of the paragraph A strong conclusion does not merely repeat the introduction. It synthesizes the main argument, shows significance, and may leave the reader with a final insight, implication, or recommendation.

A strong essay has a clear structure that helps the reader follow your ideas. Most academic essays use an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction should begin with a hook, give brief background, and end with a thesis statement. The thesis statement is the main claim or central idea of the essay, so it must be specific and arguable rather than too general. Each body paragraph should focus on one main point that supports the thesis. A good paragraph usually begins with a topic sentence, followed by explanation, examples, and evidence. The conclusion does not introduce new ideas. Instead, it restates the thesis in a fresh way, summarizes the main points, and ends with a final thought that gives the essay a sense of closure. • Introduction: hook, background, thesis. • Body paragraphs: one main idea each. • Conclusion: restate, summarize, close. At the intermediate level, students should learn to avoid weak thesis statements such as opinions with no clear direction. A better thesis tells the reader what the essay will prove or explain. For example, instead of saying climate change is important, say climate change requires stronger government action because of rising sea levels, extreme weather, and health risks.

A good paragraph should have unity and coherence. Unity means every sentence in the paragraph supports the same main idea. If one sentence introduces a new point, it should probably begin a new paragraph. Coherence means the ideas are easy to follow and connected in a logical order. To achieve coherence, use linking words and transitions. These signal relationships such as addition, contrast, cause and effect, sequence, and example. However, transitions should not be repeated too often or used in every sentence. Natural writing uses a mix of simple sentence connections, pronouns, repeated key words, and transitions. • Addition: also, moreover, in addition. • Contrast: however, on the other hand, although. • Cause and effect: therefore, as a result, because. • Sequence: first, next, finally. • Example: for instance, such as, for example. Intermediate writers often make two mistakes. First, they use too many transitions and make the essay sound mechanical. Second, they use transitions incorrectly, such as using however for addition. The best way to improve is to read each paragraph as a mini unit and check whether every sentence connects to the topic sentence and whether the order of ideas makes sense.

Before writing, good writers brainstorm and outline their ideas. Brainstorming helps you collect possible points, examples, and questions. Outlining helps you choose the best ideas and arrange them in a logical order. This saves time and makes the final essay clearer. Different essay types need different approaches. Narrative essays tell a story and usually follow a time order. Descriptive essays focus on details about a person, place, object, or event. Expository essays explain a topic clearly and fairly. Persuasive essays try to convince the reader of one position. Argumentative essays also present a position, but they usually include counter arguments and stronger evidence. Discursive essays discuss more than one side of an issue before reaching a balanced conclusion. • Brainstorm: list ideas quickly without judging them. • Outline: organize points into introduction, body, conclusion. • Evidence: facts, examples, statistics, expert opinions. • Counter argument: a different view that you answer respectfully. At this level, students should learn that claims need support. A paragraph becomes stronger when it includes specific evidence, not just general statements. It is also important to match tone to purpose. A persuasive essay often sounds more direct, while a discursive essay is more balanced and neutral. Careful planning makes both the structure and the argument stronger.
