Plan and write great essays — structure, thesis statements, paragraphs, and persuasive arguments.
At advanced level, essay writing also requires control over style, tone, and revision. Formal academic tone is usually expected in analytical, persuasive, argumentative, and expository essays. This means avoiding slang, contractions where inappropriate, emotional exaggeration, and overly personal language unless the task specifically invites it. The register should match the purpose, audience, and genre. Different essay types demand different techniques. A narrative essay may focus on sequence, sensory detail, and reflection. A descriptive essay emphasizes precise imagery and selection of details. An expository essay prioritizes clarity and explanation. A persuasive or argumentative essay depends on logical development and careful wording. A discursive essay may present multiple perspectives before reaching a balanced judgment. Advanced writers adapt style to genre rather than forcing one formula onto every task. Editing and proofreading are essential final stages, not optional extras. Revision improves ideas, structure, and evidence. Proofreading checks grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence boundaries, and reference consistency. Many advanced essays lose marks because the content is strong but the tone is inconsistent or the final draft contains preventable errors. • Check tone first: is it formal, neutral, or reflective? • Revise for logic before correcting surface errors • Read aloud to catch awkward phrasing and missing words • Check whether each sentence serves the purpose of the paragraph A strong conclusion does not merely repeat the introduction. It synthesizes the main argument, shows significance, and may leave the reader with a final insight, implication, or recommendation.
• It is clear that the policy may be ineffective. (formal tone) • The story uses scent, light, and texture to build atmosphere. (descriptive style) • This leads to a broader question about fairness in education. (synthesizing conclusion) • Gonna and stuff are inappropriate in formal academic writing. (informal register example) • The final draft removes repetition, tightens sentences, and corrects article use. (editing focus)
Use a final checklist: tone, thesis, paragraph unity, evidence, and grammar. If a sentence sounds spoken rather than written, rewrite it more precisely.
