Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions—often remembered as FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)—join elements of equal grammatical rank: words, phrases, or independent clauses. • At advanced level, the key issue is not simply choosing the correct conjunction, but ensuring balance. A conjunction should connect comparable structures: noun with noun, clause with clause, infinitive with infinitive, and so on. • Correlative conjunctions work in pairs: both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, whether...or. These require careful parallelism, because the grammar after each half should match in form and logic. • Advanced errors often arise when writers mix structures: not only is he talented but also works hard sounds unbalanced; the corrected version is not only talented but also hardworking, or he is not only talented but also works hard. • With nor and neither, subject-verb agreement can be tricky in formal writing: Neither the manager nor the assistants were informed is correct if the second noun is plural and nearest to the verb. • Coordinating conjunctions can also link independent clauses with commas, semicolons, or periods depending on style and emphasis. A comma alone cannot join two complete clauses. At this level, mastery means controlling syntax, emphasis, and rhythm while preserving grammatical symmetry.

Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses and establish relationships such as time, cause, condition, concession, purpose, and comparison. Because the subordinate clause cannot stand alone, it must be attached to an independent clause. • Advanced writers use subordination to control emphasis. Main-clause information is presented as primary, while the subordinate clause provides background, limitation, or explanation. • Common subordinators include although, because, since, while, whereas, if, unless, until, after, before, even though, once, provided that, so that, and as if. • A major challenge is distinguishing meaning. Since may indicate time or cause; while may indicate time, contrast, or simultaneous action; as can signal time, reason, or comparison depending on context. • Punctuation depends on clause position: when a dependent clause comes first, it is usually followed by a comma; when it follows the main clause, a comma is often omitted unless the clause is nonessential or the sentence would be ambiguous. • Advanced learners also need to avoid dangling or misplaced subordinators. The logical subject of the subordinate clause must match the intended main subject, especially in reduced clauses and participial constructions. Subordination is not just a grammatical tool; it is a rhetorical one. It allows writers to show cause and effect, contrast, concession, and sequencing with precision.

Conjunctive adverbs connect ideas while also signaling the relationship between them: however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, meanwhile, otherwise, thus, accordingly, and similarly are common examples. They are not coordinating conjunctions, so they require different punctuation. • When a conjunctive adverb joins two independent clauses, it is typically preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma: The plan was risky; however, it succeeded. • If the conjunctive adverb appears inside a clause, it is usually set off by commas: The plan was, however, ultimately successful. • One advanced distinction is between coordination and transition. And simply adds; however and therefore organize the logic of the discourse more explicitly. • Writers often make two major errors: using only a comma before a conjunctive adverb to join clauses, or treating the adverb as if it were a conjunction. Both are incorrect in standard formal English. • Conjunctive adverbs are especially useful in academic prose because they create precise relationships among claims, evidence, and conclusions. Mastery of these forms requires attention to both grammar and style: punctuation is part of the meaning, not just decoration.

Coordinating conjunctions join words, phrases, or independent clauses that are equal in importance. The most common coordinating conjunctions are FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. • Use and to add ideas, but to show contrast, or to present a choice. Yet often means “but,” while so shows result. For can mean “because,” and nor is used after a negative statement. • When a coordinating conjunction joins two independent clauses, use a comma before the conjunction. Example: I wanted to go, but I was too tired. • When joining items in a list, commas are usually used between items, and the conjunction comes before the last item. In many styles, the final comma before and/or is optional, but it can improve clarity. • Keep sentence parts parallel after a coordinating conjunction. This means matching grammatical forms: noun with noun, verb phrase with verb phrase, clause with clause. Parallel structure is especially important in longer sentences. Compare: She likes singing, dancing, and to paint. Better: She likes singing, dancing, and painting. Matching forms makes writing smoother and clearer. Also avoid commas alone joining independent clauses; a comma splice is incorrect unless another joining method is used.

Subordinating conjunctions connect a dependent clause to an independent clause. They show relationships such as time, reason, condition, contrast, and purpose. Common subordinating conjunctions include because, although, since, if, when, while, unless, before, after, and so that. • A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. Because it was raining is incomplete by itself. • When the dependent clause comes first, use a comma after it: Although the movie was long, we enjoyed it. • When the independent clause comes first, the comma is usually not needed: We enjoyed it although the movie was long. • Some subordinating conjunctions can create confusing meaning if used carelessly. Since may mean “because” or refer to time, so context matters. Correlative conjunctions work in pairs to connect equal parts of a sentence. Common pairs include either...or, neither...nor, both...and, not only...but also, and whether...or. These pairs must be used together, and the sentence parts should remain parallel. For example, both the structure and the meaning should match: She is both talented and hardworking. Intermediate learners should also watch subject-verb agreement with neither...nor and either...or, especially when the closer subject is singular or plural.

Conjunctive adverbs connect two independent clauses while showing a relationship such as contrast, result, addition, or sequence. Common conjunctive adverbs include however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, meanwhile, and otherwise. • When a conjunctive adverb joins two independent clauses, use a semicolon before it and usually a comma after it: The plan seemed risky; however, it worked. • If the conjunctive adverb appears at the start of a sentence, follow it with a comma: However, the plan worked. • Conjunctive adverbs are not the same as coordinating conjunctions. You cannot usually join two full clauses with just a comma and a conjunctive adverb. • Use punctuation carefully with subordinating conjunctions too. A comma is often needed when the dependent clause comes first, but not always when it comes second. Different conjunctions create different punctuation patterns. Coordinating conjunctions often use a comma before the conjunction when joining independent clauses. Subordinating conjunctions may use a comma when the dependent clause comes first. Conjunctive adverbs typically require a semicolon or a period because they are not true conjunctions in the same way FANBOYS are. Learning these punctuation patterns helps avoid comma splices and run-on sentences while making writing more precise and polished.
